So who the heck IS Moira?

astro-librium:

It’s been a really good week for villainy, and Blizzard
certainly doesn’t want to be outdone by Nintendo, so at Blizzcon they listened
to the community and gave everyone exactly
what they wanted, a Talon-aligned healer with questionable goals, named Moira.

According to the playoverwatch site, Moira O’Deorain is a
brilliant geneticist who was shunned and discredited for her work due to the
ethical questions it created, but was taken in by Blackwatch. Moira created new
weapons and technologies for Blackwatch, until the organization fell apart and
was disbanded. Her employment was kept secret, but recently uncovered during
investigations following the Venice incident, which we now know to be the
events of the “Masquerade” comic that was put out shortly after Doomfist’s
release.

Moira was then invited into the scientific collective in
Oasis, and there are whispers of an affiliation with Talon as well… So something
is clearly up.

It’s fantastic to see that Moira adds another character to
Talon’s roster, but the main question I found myself asking was where she fits
into the storylines that we have surrounding the other Talon operatives.

And I came to realize that Moira might be the Big Bad, or at
least close to it.

Moira is responsible for why the Talon members we know are
the way they are. She’s the de facto scientific lead and is responsible for
many of Talon’s achievements.

Mercy didn’t create Reaper, Moira did. Mercy saved Gabriel’s
life, but he couldn’t show his face with Overwatch disbanded and Blackwatch
condemned. So a wounded Gabriel is essentially rotting his life away hidden
because Mercy didn’t have the heart to see him die. And then Moira approaches.
She offers to give him a new persona, to enhance his abilities, to give him a
purpose – revenge. Reaper’s abilities seem to be prototypes of Moira’s own. He
has a much longer, drawn out teleport and a much weaker life-stealing ability. For
Moira, Reaper was a test, and also a way to shift the dynamic. Moira doesn’t
work for Gabriel and Blackwatch – Reaper works for Moira and Talon.

EDIT: Her new origin story now all but confirms this, with the biggest question being when exactly the experiments and testing on Gabriel began.

Widow, too, could also be a result of Moira’s experiments,
but this is more guesswork at this point. Amelie was kidnapped by Talon and
changed into an unfeeling killing machine. Who better to make these changes
than Talon’s resident geneticist?

It’s possible to tie in Doomfist as well, because if we take
a look at all of Talon’s members, the common link is their ethically
questionable genetic and cybernetic enhancements. Widow has no emotion but is ruthlessly
efficient. Reaper is in constant pain but he can’t seem to die. Doomfist is a
man consumed by his ideals of progress and advancement – of course he’d get
along with Moira and go along with her experiments. While it’s probably a case
of gameplay and story disconnect, Doomfist’s resilience and strength are almost
superhuman, even without the gauntlet.

Moira is at the very least a part of Talon’s council of evil
leaders, and is likely one of the higher members. She’s likely the one behind
the genetic augments within Talon’s membership. In return for the genetic
weaponry she provides, she is able to continue her research and further her own
purposes – science for science’s sake, ethics be damned.

I cannot wait to
see how her storyline pays out. Of interest is the fact that Moira and Reaper are
clearly acquainted, as they should be. Reaper has the following reaction with Sombra
on Oasis:

Sombra: So what are we doing here boss?

Reaper
: I need to pay a visit to a friend.

What business does Reaper have with Moira, the woman who
likely made his life a living hell? And how did Sombra weasel her way into a meeting
with such a powerful member in Talon’s hierarchy?

Shit’s about to go down,
and I think Moira is going to be the missing puzzle piece of Talon’s storyline.

officialmichaelchu:

I don’t really buy the whole “Gabriel Reyes sold out and destroyed Overwatch out of jealousy” meta because that’s just. Such a lame and overused story trope.

What I do believe is that Gabriel planted himself right in the middle of Talon and all their trouble in order to act as a spy. Sure, when Jack accepted his rightful role as Commander of Overwatch, it must have greatly hurt him- but this is Gabriel Reyes, the man who led the strike team responsible for saving the damn world against the omnics.

It doesn’t fit that he would throw all of his efforts, all the work and blood he spilt to save the entire world out of the window just because of a title and position.

Moira makes this all the more complicated, considering he invited her into Blackwatch- but what if he was doing it to keep an eye on her?

Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer. It’s the oldest trick in the book. And in this image:

He’s utterly horrified. My theory is that this was a sort of initiation for Gabriel to join Talon- offer his body for Moira’s experiments and that would prove how loyal he was.

There’s a lot of fishy stuff going on, and in my opinion, no one can really conclude that Gabriel is utterly evil- not until more lore is given to us.

Pulling up a list of relevant quotes with timestamps for future reference (all italics represent emphasis as said by the speaker):

1. “She was recruited by Gabriel Reyes to be a member of Blackwatch.  And uh, during that time she had relationships with the Blackwatch crew – McCree, Genji – they all have their own sort of likes and dislikes for each other.  Reyes wanted someone could help advise him on, uh, some matters of genetics that he was, uh, interested in, shall we say.” – Michael Chu, 3:47 (https://youtu.be/HsJU3PEk9JY?t=227)

2. “In the present day, Moira has allied herself with Talon now that Overwatch is gone.  When you think about Moira’s goals, figuring out these building blocks of human evolution, and her need to like push forward science at any cost, that really meshes well with the goal of Talon – and so she has found new patrons, like Doomfist.” – Michael Chu, 4:20 (eyyyyyyy) (https://youtu.be/HsJU3PEk9JY?t=260)

3. “Currently, in addition to her duties as a scientist for Talon, Moira was also invited by the Ministers of Oasis to become their Minister of Genetics, and so she is basically leading up their genetic research at the city – and this [referring to her Oasis skin] is what she’d wear when she’s over there.” – Michael Chu, 11:12 (https://youtu.be/HsJU3PEk9JY?t=672) (I KNEW shady stuff was going down in Oasis).

4. Geoff Goodman: “It [Her Fade ability] has some similarities to Reaper’s wraith form…uh which is…it’s funny how that works out.”
Michael Chu: “You know, we obviously – there’s a…there’s a close relationship between Moira and Reyes-slash-Reaper, and I think one of the fun things we were able to do is to sort of hint at some of those things in her, uh, abilities.”
Geoff Goodman: “She’s helping Reaper out and is like, ‘You know, I think I could make this better, I have an idea.’”
Michael Chu: “Professional relationship.”
Geoff Goodman: “Ahaha, yes…good call.”
Michael Chu: “You know what I’m talking about.”

A Fate Worse Than Death

segadores-y-soldados:

Moira: The name Moira is a given name of Greek origin, deriving from μοῖρα, meaning “destiny, share, fate”.

I’ve already seen people asking me when my essay is going to happen and I need to be completely honest with you guys:

This has been one of the most stressful weeks of my life in a very long time.  I do not have the energy – physical or emotional – to write a full essay at this moment.  I have, however, already seen people making mistakes on where Moira stands in the lore, and I want to clarify some of those:

Timeline: Moira was only a part of Blackwatch for less than a full year – its final year (aka, the final year of Overwatch).

Mercy Did Not “Create”Reaper

attamo:

Moira did.

In Moira’s Origin story, we see Moira testing on Gabriel Reyes. There is a look of fear, of terror in his eyes as smoke rises from his body… The very smoke that will drift off his skin non-stop in the future as he becomes “Reaper”

Gabe came to Moira in search of power…in search of gaining an advantage. As a previous subject to the Super Soldier Enhancement program, he was already powerful…but not quite as powerful as Jack Morrison, Overwatch’s “poster child.”

Moira, desperate to advance her technology at any cost, knew this would happen. While unsure of how her technology would react with the Super Soldier Enhancement, she did not tell Gabe everything. She would not just give him an advantage.

She would make him into an advantage.

Why Gabe?

Experimenting on Gabe would allow Moira to understand her technology better, as the only trials she’d conducted had been on animals, such as rabbits.

Did Moira test on herself? She was ready to…yet experimenting with death had no returns. Fearful for her own sake, she tested on Gabe to get a better grasp of her technology, so she could perfect it.

This led to Gabriel Reyes losing his form, possibly even dying. He went to Mercy to be healed, to be saved.

Yet Gabriel Reyes could not be saved. Instead, he became Reaper and was born anew with a passionate hatred for Overwatch, the very organization that pushed him to become what he was.

With the experiments on Gabriel complete, Moira finally gained a better understanding of her work. Seeing Reaper consume health from others, she learned how to perfect her own abilities to heal into a more concentrated stream while dealing damage.

With Reaper’s teleportation and drift, she learned how to concentrate her powers enough to allow her fade ability.

Moira used Gabe to advance herself.

And with Gabriel Reyes’s death and birth as Reaper, Moira was able to become who she was;

A Master of Death.
