I saw Zootopia last night and as I drove home all I could think about was how the hell the police investigated crime that took place in habitats designed for smaller animals.

Like their smallest recruit literally towers over the citizens of the rodent habitat.  What the fuck is a polar bear going to do if a vole gets murdered?  Forget all of the fine tools needed to dust for prints, does the poor grieving widow vole now have to deal with being homeless because the only way the ZPD could photograph the crime scene was to literally rip her roof off?

I bet you that’s why the mafia is a literal rat pack and a shrew is the most feared crime boss in town.  Who else is going to protect your gaggle of little adorable hamster children when your businesshamster husband gets caught cooking the books to try and pay off his hamster gambling debt and some guinea pig bookie comes to literally shake your family down for the cash?

Oh my gods now Mr. Big makes sense.

You would think that little rodentia (that’s what it’s called right?) would have its own police force just for its own citizens, because their community is like a city all to itself separate from the rest of Zootopia, even though it is still in the main city

The thing is, there IS a mouse-sized police force.

Sorry to break all those ‘little’ headcanons…

How could one play a manipulative character?

kgillsrpc:

Ah, manipulative people. Oh-so-fun to write, not so much fun when you encounter them in real life. Here are a few things you can implement when writing or roleplaying such a character.

Flattery

Manipulative people will often be incredibly nice and sweet to you, and shower you with compliments to get you to do their bidding; butter you up, if you will. Basically, manipulative people will can be the best friend you’ve ever had as long as that friendship gains them; and once they feel you’re useless to them, they will either be your worst enemy, or treat you like air.

Hidden agendas

Perhaps a manipulative person doesn’t have a hidden agenda when brushing their teeth, but it’s not unlikely for them to have one whenever they interact with others, and that they’re always thinking about ways to get their will through. Don’t pin what they do on chance, but instead consider the fact that there might be an underlying reason for whatever they do in the company of others—until proven otherwise.

Bullying and guilt-tripping

When flattery doesn’t work, manipulative people will often show a more negative side and turn to things such as bullying and guilt-tripping to get what they want. Instead of making you feel like the best person in the world, they will make you feel like the scum of the Earth; chewed on, spat out, and stomped on. Most likely you’ll end up agreeing to their demands; not because you want to, but because you have to.

Stealth

What makes manipulative people so tricky, is the fact that they’re usually rather suave and pretty good at covering their tracks. Chances are you won’t even know you’re being manipulated until it’s too late; if you ever notice at all. Don’t write the manipulation tactics as being used too obviously, but instead, try to slip it into the writing with a little bit of stealth.

That’s pretty much all I can think of right now, so hopefully you got something out of it. Here are some additional links you might find useful:

Good luck!

Coco music

karengutierrezart:

If you are interested in Mexican music after having watched pixar’s coco, but have no idea where to begin, then this post is for you.

An introduction to Mexican music for beginners:
I would recommend you to watch the golden era Mexican movies. Music was huge in movies back then, and Ernesto de la Cruz was inspired in both Jorge Negrete and Pedro Infante, two very famous actors and singers from that time. Other singers had a more “comical” style and still sang, like Tin Tan (though they were more acclaimed as comedians). Other were only comedians, but were pretty good, like Cantinflas. Really, those 4 are very well loved by everyone. And Ernesto de la Cruz was partly what made me feel like this film was really accurate and inspired in the Mexico I know, unlike other movies like Nacho Libre, for example.

Sorry, I have no idea what happened after that, I never listened to any music in the radio while growing up, only oldies, and I stopped watching tv in the early 2000s. So, if you know what is listened nowadays in Mexico and who are the big names and their greatest song, please feel free to post your own list in a reply.

upperstories:

Things I learned from the ingenious and somehow more heart wrenching Junior Novelization of Pixar’s Coco!

-Hector is truly infamous in the Land of the Dead’s Grand Central Station. The woman who stops him at the gate not only knows him by name but remembers Hector’s previous attempts to cross the marigold bridge, and has seen through all of his hair-brained schemes. She even warns him, “You know the drill…” before calling security. I wouldn’t be surprised if all the security guards placed a bet around Dia de los Muertos, All of the guards and receptionists and greeters trying to guess what Hector’s plan will be, when he’ll try to crossover, how long it takes before anyone hails him in, etc.

-Hector actually has 2 dimples, and not just one like I’d previously imagined! Though in his photo in the film, it looks like one is deeper than the other, favoring the same side as Miguel’s single dimple. But the book explicitly says he has 2.

-Shantytown and the poor souls who live in it are a treasure and Deserved Better (I wish some of their dialogue had made it into the final movie). When the deceased Riveras are tracking Miguel, they passed through shantytown and the place where Tia Chelo and her friends were playing poker, only to find that their game table is abandoned, along with other sad scenes of other souls fading away. Those poor dears… (The Land of the Dead should SERIOUSLY consider opening some kind of a Retirement home for the nearly forgotten!)

-Before going on stage and singing Poco Loco, Hector tells Miguel that the secret of the perfect performance is to sing with the people you care about in mind, like your singing to them and only them with all your heart. Hector implies that he does this whenever he sings, thinking of “someone still in the Lamd of the Living”. When Miguel finally gathers up the courage to sing, he thinks of singing to Mama Coco, the only Rivera who ever loved music as much as Miguel. Although we don’t know it at the time, in that moment, Hector and Miguel both think of the same person when they wish to Sing For The Person They Love Most. (And yes, I had to take five minutes to cry before continuing)

-Miguel once wrote a song for Ernesto de la Cruz and spent all of his allowance on a mug as offerings to his hero. Upon discovering the piles of gifts Ernesto has received from the Many ofrendas raised in his honor, he realizes Ernesto has probably never even see his offerings.

-During Hector’s flashback, he recounts how during his travels with Ernesto, he’d wake up in so many hotel rooms, all of them so alike and repetitive that he often forgot what town he was in and would feel very disorientated from homesickness. Pobrecito…

-Mama Coco never stopped thinking about her Papa, in spite of years of living under her mother’s scorn of him and music. She even pretended to dance to music that Hector used to play to her, and sang to baby Miguel! (Possibly sparking the child’s love of music) I wonder if the song she hummed to him was Remember Me… 💛💜💀 I Hope So

-It’s implied in the book that Mama Coco passed away “a few months” before Dia de los Muertos, possibly implying she died some time in July or August. Assuming that Miguel’s mother looks about 5 or 6 months pregnant earlier in the film, this could mean that the baby was born in February or March, implying that Mama Coco got to meet her baby granddaughter! At least, I hope so anyway.

-Upon finally being allowed to cross the bridge, Hector sings as he walks (in a brand new pair of Rivera shoes, blister free! Thanks to Imelda), Coco dances to his singing, and Imelda harmonizes with Hector. They can finally sing, dance, and count their blessings together, for the first time in nearly a century.

-When Miguel learns that crawlspace he used as his musical haven in the attic was the same space that Mama Coco used to dance, he finds an old pair of dance shoes she used to wear and polishes them all sparkling and new. He brings it to Mama Coco’s grave as an offering, so that she may dance to her heart’s content in the afterlife.

-Hector, in spite of being much more put together than the previous year, still carries some cheeky skeletal habits. Unseen to Miguel, he uses his own skull as a drum, and his ribs as a washboard to add more rhythm to chamaco’s music.

So yeah. This book killed me in the best possible way. 💜💛💜💛💜💛💜💛

ALSO!!!! THERES AN AUDIOBOOK FOR IT TOO, DUBBED BY THE AUTHOR!!!! AND ITS SO GOOD YOU GUYS ITS SO GOOD

So one thing I don’t think is brought up enough is Hector’s boundless optimism and hopefulness. There’s a lot of talk in the fandom about the various tragic things about him–he’s falling apart due to being forgotten, 90 years of failed bridge crossings, Imelda continuously rejecting him when it wasn’t his fault he died–but he finds ways to make it work.

Didn’t make the bridge crossing as an alebrije? Okay, we’ll try again next year.

Bones not staying together as well as they should? Cool, let’s learn some tricks.

Imelda still turning him away? He wooed her once, he could probably do it again.

As tragic as we find Hector, he doesn’t see himself that way, and I think that’s part of what makes him so charming. He’s not naive, and he’s very aware that he’s being forgotten and time is running out, but he still tries, and he still finds the best in his situation.

THIS!!!

Life tip: if you ever find yourself in a really crappy time or situation, just think WWHD, what would Hector do? And you’ll find yourself in a better place.

^Unless your best friend offers you tequila when you tell them you want to go home. Then do the EXACT OPPOSITE of what Hector does, please.
