I’m trying to write a post-movie fic but it’s not quite coming together. For now, here’s the first snippet from it; I have a second snippet I’ll upload later, too.
“You know, you can tell me if I’m in hell.”
Imelda entered the afterlife in the
same way she spent a majority of her life: alone, ready to get to work, and
frustrated at what was keeping her from getting to work. A few hours ago, the
target of that frustration had been her arthritis and weak lungs; now, it was
the skeleton in front of her who was sorting through entirely too many files
and making her wait.
Because I couldn’t stop thinking about @scribblrhob‘s Teacher!AU and @upperstories‘s art for said Teacher!AU, I ended up writing something that’s probably a mess to read because I want to end 2017 crying about Hector and Miguel.
Guys. Guys. We’re all missing what’s right in front of us.
Hector didn’t woo Imelda with “Un Poco Loco.” He had to have written it once he actually knew her better and had been with her for some time. The song he used to get her attention was the one Ernesto was singing in one of his movies at the beginning, when the lady stepped out onto the balcony.
So one thing I don’t think is brought up enough is Hector’s boundless optimism and hopefulness. There’s a lot of talk in the fandom about the various tragic things about him–he’s falling apart due to being forgotten, 90 years of failed bridge crossings, Imelda continuously rejecting him when it wasn’t his fault he died–but he finds ways to make it work.
Didn’t make the bridge crossing as an alebrije? Okay, we’ll try again next year.
Bones not staying together as well as they should? Cool, let’s learn some tricks.
Imelda still turning him away? He wooed her once, he could probably do it again.
As tragic as we find Hector, he doesn’t see himself that way, and I think that’s part of what makes him so charming. He’s not naive, and he’s very aware that he’s being forgotten and time is running out, but he still tries, and he still finds the best in his situation.
THIS!!!
Life tip: if you ever find yourself in a really crappy time or situation, just think WWHD, what would Hector do? And you’ll find yourself in a better place.
^Unless your best friend offers you tequila when you tell them you want to go home. Then do the EXACT OPPOSITE of what Hector does, please.
