Aqua’s experience in A Fragmentary Passage and subsequent Norting changed the entire way I look at Light and Darkness in the Kingdom Hearts series.

invigoraide:

Up until now, the light/darkness dichotomy was only ever
something I interpreted as being a plot-specific force within the narrative. Sure,
we had characters verbally telling us that darkness is related to negative
emotions, light is related to friendship and positivity, etc. but beyond characters
getting powered up for battle after verbally making those connections (“My friends
are my power,” basically anything that comes out of Ansem SOD’s mouth), we don’t
really get a chance to see what that means.

A Fragmentary Passage connected the emotions to the forces
in a much more obvious way, for me at
least. I’ll never forget playing the mirror level that has Aqua’s inner
monologue going the whole time and realizing that, holy shit, this game is
about depression! And then we see the E3 trailer from this year. For her to get
Norted, we know she had to succumb to The Darkness, and because we have her experience
in AFP as a background, we know how she got to that point and exactly what she was feeling when it
happened.
(Yes, AFP ended on a more hopeful note, but … I still think this
is probably what happened).

I’m playing through all the main games again, and suddenly,
the rest of the series has a LOT more context. The Xehanort/Eraqus
arguments get a lot more nuance. Honestly, I think Xehanort has a little bit of
a point? Light and Darkness (ie: positive emotions and negative emotions)
existing in a balance seems WAY healthier than just trying to have ALL POSITIVE
EMOTIONS ALL THE TIME. This could apply to “The closer you get to the light,
the greater your shadow becomes.” The more you try to push down or hide your
negative emotions in an attempt to remain positive 24/7, the more that
negativity festers beneath the surface and can explode out of you. Maybe this
is what happened with Terra. Dealing with the Darkness is something that has
plagued him since he was a kid, but because light-obsessed Eraqus basically
raised him, he had to repress negativity until it sorta just exploded in BBS. (As
someone with mental health problems who grew up in a family that didn’t talk about
problems or emotions and just pretended everything was fine all the time… my
most recent BBS playthrough hit me kind of hard.) Along these same lines “hearts
of pure light” don’t seem totally healthy either? Maybe it’s different for Princesses
of Heart, because they’re Naturally Occurring, but it makes total sense why my
boy Ven was so fragile after Vanitas got ripped out of him. In any case I am
REALLY SCARED for Sora. I know he was close to getting Norted in DDD, but if he
just tries to stay positive all the time because so many people are counting on
him my boy is going to BREAK.

Now, when I see the darkness cloud animation emanating off a
character, I have context for what that means and what that feels like. When
Terra uses his dark command styles, I used to think “well yeah, he’s mad” but
know I get that he’s pissed. When a
Nort uses dark attacks, I get that he’s channeling his greed, his feelings of
superiority. When Sora goes into Anti-form, I get that this is his moment of
release, where he physically can’t be
his happy-go-lucky self. The black cloaks, which protect people when travelling
in corridors of darkness, have the power to shield
people from negative emotions
. Does turning into a heartless feel like being overwhelmed with hopelessness and dread?

This also makes Riku’s arc way more interesting to me! His “road
to dawn” becomes a road to recovery!! Instead of pushing down his negativity,
he lives with it! He uses it to his advantage without letting it overtake him!!!
He doesn’t pretend to be sunshine and rainbows, and his friends still love
him!!!!

I don’t really have a conclusion to this. I’m just really
glad that they did what they did with A Fragmentary Passage.

In the books, Hermione’s boggart is failing her classes. Her greatest fear is failing her classes.

However, it goes a lot deeper than that. Subconsciously, I think she believes that if she does not do well and if she fails, they’ll kick her out of Hogwarts and the Wizarding World. So her real fear isn’t failing.

At Hogwarts, she has two wonderful friends who love her, and she is getting to live in an incredible world. She doesn’t want to lose that, and she thinks that if she does bad in her classes, they won’t let her come back.

Her real fear is rejection and loss.

so what if…

when in the philosophers stone her line “we could be killed, or worse.. expelled” wasn’t her being snooty or a teachers pet..

but her saying that she would rather die than stop going to hogwarts and never see her friends again?

Toy Chica’s Cutscenes Theory

Sooo this theory is very simple. When Toy Chica is glaring at Twisted Wolf (idk??) she says something very interesting

“He’ll be mine by the end of the day – I just know it! I told him someone ran over his dog in front of my house”

Wait… This sounds familiar. Remember the fruit maze minigame from FNAF 6? We were playing as a little girl, she was all happy in the first time you play, then the other two times she gets sadder. And why??

BECAUSE HER PET WAS RAN OVER! In the minigame you see what it appears to be images of an animal ran over, covered in blood, and you even hear a sound of a car horn, symbolizing the moment her pet was ran over and possibly died.

And what does William dressed up as SpringBonnie say to the sad little girl??

This was how William Afton tricked the little girl into following him and, later on, murdering her.

This connection shows that these Toy Chica’s Cutscenes aren’t just symbolizing William Afton’s killing spree. What if they are actually telling us how William tricked the children into following him and murdering them, taking advantage of their weaknesses just like Toy Chica did with her boyfriends??

What if these cutscenes are actually really important and we shouldn’t sleep on them??

Can we take a moment to appreciate what a huge fucking DORK Chloe is sometimes? I just got into Lucifer recently and at first I wasn’t sure I could relate to her since she’s all stunningly beautiful and badass but then I saw some of her awkward moments and went ‘oh no that’s meeee’

tarysande:

I always have time to appreciate the utter dorkiness (and depth) of Chloe Jane Decker.

image

Her awkwardness and dorkiness are a huge part of what make her such a fleshed out and real character. So often, badass women aren’t allowed (in film and television and books) to have any other characteristics. Badassery (whatever that means; usually leather, being a loner, and sarcasm) only need apply.

Chloe gets to be a great mom who loves her kid and talks to her like a Real Mom, not a BadassMom. They snuggle and cuddle and read stories. Chloe disciplines her daughter and apologizes when she makes mistakes. She’s allowed to love. A lot. And not just The Love Interest. Her lack of friends is actually discussed and allowed to change. Sometimes she’s angry. Sometimes she cries. Sometimes she loses her temper. She laughs—sometimes, she even ugly-laughs; it’s not always a polite, feminine titter. She’s allowed to have issues and not get along with everyone (even her own mom). She’s allowed to be brave and courageous and sometimes she’s allowed to be really scared. She’s allowed to doubt and question and also believe. She’s allowed to be tender and soft and jealous and tough. She’s allowed to care so much about so many things.

Is she a badass? Hell yeah. Is that all she is? No way.

Chloe gets to be a dork who does not have game when it comes to being overly sexy (a la Lucinda) or forward (a la Chloe in 2×12), but who has a real way with people–she connects with them so well–when she’s being herself. She’s smart and beautiful but not All The Time, No Matter What. Even the way her usual appearance is casual and sometimes almost haphazard (Maze making fun of her for wearing whatever; shirts often untucked or baggy; hair not always perfect) contrasts with how drop-dead stunning she can be when she ‘dresses up’ is fantastic. I mean, how often do we see female characters who ALWAYS look as perfect as Chloe looks when she’s really putting effort into it?

Chloe gets to be a real person. I love that so much. I value that so much. Having her on television is so incredibly important.

I’ve always been bothered by Sora’s story for The Grid in DDD. But now replaying it (and being older and wiser- IT FINALLY CLICKED!!) I finally understand what was going on. I was annoyed by how the game seemed to suggest that the Tron in The Grid is the same Tron from the Space Paranoids in 2, aka, Sora’s Tron. Sora was hell bent on proving that Tron’s heart is still alive inside Rinzler and that he’s the friend that he remembers. In the end, Sora does seem to succeed in making Tron remember who he is (he reached for his hand!) which really confused me. (It confused a lot of other fans too which is why I feel the need to write this.) But the thing is, that’s not what happened. It was established in the beginning of 3D that Sora and Riku would see people that seem familiar to them in the dream worlds they venture off to, but they may not actually be the people they’ve met in real life. It was even established in 2 that the Tron in Traverse Town is a copy of the actual program. Sora had this in mind before traveling to The Grid. But more importantly, Sora never said that Tron/Rinzler was his Tron nor did he even urge Rinzler to remember him. He just knew, because his Tron is a good person who likes to help people, (and he’s a copy of the original Tron) then that must mean this Tron in The Grid is a good person too. On top of that, he was turned evil by CLU. So of course Sora would go above and beyond to try to get this Tron back to normal.

But how if he has no connection to the Tron in The Grid? He didn’t even know for sure he could change him back or that this Tron even has a heart to fix. BUT! Remember what Ansem the Wise said about Sora at the end of DDD? “Our most precious treasures- even an empty puppet- the trees of the forest, and the petals on the wind-there are hearts around us everywhere we look. …Sora has a heart like that -uncorrupted, willing to see the good before the bad. When he sees the heart in something, it then becomes real. When a connection seems broken, he may have the power to mend it.” Remember how everyone around him was adamant, “Programs don’t have hearts.”, but Sora is such an amazing person that he was able to see the heart his, the Space Paranoids’, Tron possessed. He wasn’t just a program to him. Tron was also his friend. And Sora’s Tron knew too that just being around Sora made him feel something special. This ability was the key to getting Rinzler to change back into Tron.

He didn’t even know this Tron. Never had a connection with this Tron. But he was even able to convince Quorra, a program, that Tron is still alive (as in his heart is alive) inside of Rinzler enough to cheer him on. That in itself is amazing! And because of Sora’s strong heart, he was able to awaken it enough that, by the end when CLU goes to attack Sora, ‘Rinzler’ protected him by pushing him out of the way. And then of course when the glass breaks underneath him, why wouldn’t the almost fully awakened Tron try to grab the hand of the kind hearted boy who’s trying to help him? ON TOP OF THAT!!, Tron reacted and looked (and reached) in Sora’s direction when he yelled his name, “Tron!” something he did not do before then.

So anyway, that’s my take on the matter. I hope this helps out those who never really got this either :3 Sorry for the long post, but I had to! I can’t believe how off the mark I was before! I so, so love DDD though and always have!

KH3 E3 Trailer Translation and Analysis – Marluxia and Xigbar

phoenix-downer:

So I was watching the Japanese version of the Pirates of the Caribbean trailer and noticed something interesting: Xigbar’s dialogue is longer in the English version to make up for not having the scene with Marluxia that’s in the Japanese version.

Here’s Marluxia’s dialogue. No subtitles, so I did my best to record it as accurately as possible:

JP: 私は頼みがあってお前に会いに来たんだ。

TR: I came to see you because I have a favor to ask.

Notes: He uses watashi to refer to himself, which Xehanort also uses. But Marluxia also used watashi to refer to himself in Chain of Memories when I checked one of his cutscenes with Axel, so not a big change there.

Anti-Form

Anti-Form in KH2 always fascinated me. Because according to an interview with Nomura Sora gets this power (from a story perspective) as a side effect of him becoming a Heartless once. This is even reflected in Halloween Town where he has a Heartless Mask in that form. He’s even more likely to turn into one in fights with Organization Members because of his anger towards them and their taunting. It Sora using the Power of Darkness himself but unlike Riku Sora seems to do this unintentionally and with no control seeing as he becomes more feral during this form. It’s basically Sora becoming a Heartless without actually being a Heartless. It’s very much a double edged sword as it’s very strong but also dangerous to yourself because you can’t heal. You’re just this primal… thing. No Keyblade, not much of a human, but not really a Heartless, no magic, no tactics, unpredictable attacks and patterns. Just a ball of Darkness and aggression. The thing is I feel like this is the pure embodiment of all the Darkness Sora has buried away in him. It’s stated that he is actually very sad, has a lot of fear, and anger and worry in him but he buries it and doesn’t confront it. Hiding with a smile, jokes and distracting himself with helping others. It’s actually made him a prime target for Xehanort, because if he can get Sora to crack just enough then he can get him. He has so much light in him but an equal amount of Darkness and those fights with the group of Nobodies whose entire mission objective with Sora revolves around making him angry just makes that built up anxiety, sadness and anger break through the surface even for a few seconds and manifests as this wild, feral shadow of a boy that’s literally a whirlwind of violence, throwing away his own well-being just to hurt these people.

Okay so about Lexaeus…

ask-the-stalwart-puzzler:

Listen, guys. I see A LOT of posts in the Lexaeus Tag about Lexaeus beating a child to near-death (in order for him to learn about Limit Breaks, mind you)

But I feel like no one ever really delves deeper into the rest of Roxas’s experience with Lexaeus in 358/2 Days.

For Starters: In the original DS game after enduring almost every organization member (Saix, Larxene, Zexion, Marluxia, Xigbar, and ESPECIALLY Vexen) treating you like an absolute idiot (aside from Axel) you meet Lexaeus.
Not only does this large, hulking monolith of a man have the patience to explain how to use the Limit Break without treating you like an imbecile he has the GALL to tell you that you are valued:

Which like…. BLOWS Roxas’s MIND to the point of him saying:

To which Lex bluntly responds:

And even in the manga he says:

(In the actual American release he says that they’d beg him for 3 days and 3 nights if it meant having Roxas on their team)

But that Manga panel about him “Becoming passionate” is something that holds true in the game. When Roxas asks why they are trying to complete Kingdom Hearts, Lex looks wistfully into the distance and says:

This poor fucking guy doesn’t even quite REALIZE what he’s doing… he just knows it will make him whole. That’s all he wants. It’s what ALL of them want.

and when your day with Lexaeus is done Roxas postulates:

or MY FAVORITE….. the original DS version:

[Our group had its good apples,
just like it had its bad.
But everybody wanted the same thing:
to complete Kingdom Hearts.]

SO LIKE. LEMME BE REAL HERE:
WHEN PEOPLE BOIL LEXAEUS DOWN TO A BIG, SMASHY MAN WHO BEATS CHILDREN I REALLY WANT TO CRY BECAUSE HE’S ACTUALLY A BIG, PATIENT, SOFT BOY WHO WANTS ROXAS TO KNOW THAT HE’S VALUED AND JUST WANTS TO BE HUMAN AGAIN AND DO HIS JOB.

(And don’t even get me STARTED on Lexaeus picking up odd jobs that the other team members put onto him when they slack off.)

Lexaeus/Aeleus is the real MVP of the Kingdom Hearts series and I genuinely love him to pieces.

About Jack Morrison…Again

jessejackreyes:

I would argue that, currently, we have more actual canon characterization for Jack Morrison than for any other character in Overwatch.

He has a short to himself, one of very few characters that don’t share the spotlight in it in fact. He is also a main or major character in multiple comics. So there is a lot to unpack here.

The short came out first, but I feel like it makes more sense to start with the comics, because there we can talk about strike commander Jack Morrison and then Soldier 76 comes in later.

Oddly enough we can start with the retribution comic. This was primarily about Gabriel Reyes, but Jack has an important part right near the end. The last few pages involve them essentially burying the victims of a Talon attack, many members of Overwatch died in it.

Gabriel wants to react, to take revenge and ensure that something like this never happens again. Jack is skeptical and worried that things might get worse if they misstep. In the end, however, when asked for his permission, he tacitly endorses Gabriel’s plan, trusting in him. He is willing to bend because he believes in Gabriel.

The uprising comic actually features a similar dilemma. Violent Omnic terrorists have taken over Kings Row and have hurt/killed hundreds or thousands of people and could easily kill many more. The prime minister of England has refused to allow Overwatch to interfere, which is framed as arrogant and childish political posturing.

When Gabriel gives an update in the situation, he makes it clear that he thinks they should interfere. Jack is hesitant, torn between saving people’s lives and the duties placed upon him by the international community. At first, he clearly intends to accede to the prime minister’s demands, but he speaks with different people about the issue and ultimately is convinced to protect the innocent lives, despite the political cost he would suffer.

How are these two events similar exactly? Simple, in both of them he faces a difficult decision, one where differing priorities are in conflict and ultimately, he is willing to bend when other people offer him advice. He is willing to listen to other’s and reevaluate decisions based on new information.

The Hero short gives us our biggest bit of characterization for 76 as opposed to Jack. In it we see the new identity he has adopted. The fight against the gang members is actually quite brutal at points, especially for the rating. He basically beats a gang member to death with a piñata. He is tough, no nonsense, does what is necessary etc.

We also, however, see the truth of the matter. When faced with the choice of completing his mission or saving a little girls life, he hesitates, but ultimately makes the heroic decision. The hesitation is important because it underscores the difference between Jack and 76, while the ultimate choice informs us that this persona is, at least in part, an act. He may want to be this remorseless killing machine, but he can’t simply let go of who he was.

This is ultimately confirmed in the old soldiers comic, the entire point of which is that none of the big 3 have ever truly moved on from war or their pasts. They all still fight, because it’s all they know. And Jack at least to some degree, longs for the past while seeing no real future for himself.

So why am I talking about all of this? Because, despite us having a decent amount of concrete character points for him, I consistently see people really negatively portraying/talking about him with things that are explicitly not true.

He is not a narcissistic self righteous prick. That is incredibly out of character for him. He frequently worries about others, sympathizes with them and listens to them. When they disagree, he considers their viewpoints and sometimes changes his opinions/decisions when they bring up good points and never dismisses them out of hand. None of these are things that a delusional self important jackass does. They are, in fact, incompatible with such a personality.

If anything the comics make him out to be a bit meek, too easily swayed by other people’s feelings and desires. I don’t think that was their intention, but it is a far more believable interpretation of his character.

Hell if anyone is self-righteous and high on themselves it’s frickin Gabriel. When told not to apologize for doing what he had to, his response is, “I never have and don’t intend to start now.”

That just screams too assured of the righteousness of one’s cause, unlike anything that Jack has ever been portrayed doing or saying. In fact, as a character flaw, it makes sense towards leading Gabriel down a bad road. With that attitude it is easy to keep justifying more and more things in the pursuit of your noble goals. If nothing you do can be wrong, what won’t you do?

It even fits the idea that Jeff Kaplan talked about with Jack always excusing Gabriel’s actions and how that enabling helped lead Gabriel down the road to villainy.

Now I want to write some meek Jack blinded by his love, unable to see that Gabriel needs his help because he puts the man on an impossible pedestal. It doesn’t help that the man himself won’t admit that he needs help and Jack tends to believe the things he says.

This turned into partially a rant, but sometimes I just need to vent and this seemed a harmless enough way to deal with a bad day.

Theory: The Junkers Are Eating Poisoned Food.

mx-fawkes:

Fish seems to be a pretty popular dish in Junkertown, you can see it being prepared in a couple of places on the map, as well as on the takeaway menu.

If you look outside the city the two main food sources would be the forested area and the river, there don’t seem to be any agricultural efforts at all.

So if all the fish in Junkertown are coming from that river…

Junkertown dumps waste right into its main food source.

Eating polluted fish won’t kill you right away, but chemicals absorbed by fish can be absorbed by the humans that eat them, possibly causing cancer, liver disease, nervous system damage, impaired mental development, and if eaten by anyone pregnant can cause fetal damage.

Blizzard probably didn’t think too much about the food supply in Junkertown, as it’s inspired by the nonsensical world of Mad Max, but…

Impaired mental development, nervous system damage causing tics, and possibly a missing limb due to poor fetal development?
